“Mind the Gap!” shouts the automated system as you board the Tube (the London Underground).
Mind the Gut! might be a more useful piece of advice to all of us everywhere. If you are in a mind space you are not happy with, and you want to change stations to one where you feel better, your gut might very well be the train that can take you there.
There is a very strong connection between the mind and the gut. Anxiety can give you indigestion or butterflies in the stomach or diarrhoea, but what is less obvious to most of us is that gut disorders can affect how you feel mentally. For example, up to a third of those with IBS experience anxiety or depression at the same time
Given this strong connection and that over 90% of the vital feel-good chemical serotonin is actually made in the gut, it comes as no surprise that homeopathic remedies which stimulate your body to rebalance the environment in your gut (typically the Bowel Nosodes) can have a huge effect on your mental health.
Defensive and Anxious
Take Tiffany, for example, who had always felt very criticised as a child, and that her parents valued her less than her siblings. This had resulted in her feeling not good enough as an adult, and she would get quite defensive if someone questioned her abilities. It also meant that she felt she was very focussed on hanging on to the freedom to make her own choices. Her lack of self-confidence meant that she would get terribly worried about events beforehand and felt very self-conscious when she had to talk in meetings. All of these difficulties meant that it was much harder for Tiffany to do as well as she knew she could at work, and this was really making her depressed.
The Bowel Nosode called Sycotic Co really turned this situation around.
Tiffany told me:
“My mood has lifted: I feel happier and lighter. My self-confidence is much better and I am getting less caught up in things. I am able to be more vocal about what I want, so situations don’t escalate the way they did before. Plus my sleep and my vaginal thrush are both hugely better, and my periods are way less painful. All that from those tiny pills! I’m doing so much better it’s been wonderful.” (Read more about addressing anxiety in children so problems do not get carried forward into adult life here.)
Angry and Frustrated
Niall was 15 – and frustrated and angry. He was having a very bad time at school where the teachers seemed unable to either recognise or make any effort to accommodate his ADD. He had a mind that moved much more quickly than most, and probably a very high IQ as well, neither of which sounded as if they were being remotely challenged. The result of this was that he was bored almost all the time at school, and it was driving him nuts. He was also naturally impatient, and probably hitting a massive testosterone surge given his age and how his muscles looked as if they were filling out. All in all a rather explosive situation.
His parents had no idea how to help him: his anger and frustration were so bad that he would suddenly become furious over apparently small things at home, and occasionally he just punched holes in the plasterboard walls of their rented flat. A few doses of the Bowel Nosode called Proteus smoothed things out enormously. The remedy didn’t (sadly) change the attitude of his teachers, but Niall found it easier to cope with everything, and there were fewer explosions at home. Everyone was very relieved.
