Can your mind affect your body? Can your body affect your mind?
The answer, of course, is that the two are completely intertwined: each is part of the other, and all are part of you. Most people would agree they are interconnected, but in fact they are so interwoven that any real healing must consider both together. There is no point in fixing a leak in the plumbing downstairs and ignoring the fact that the header tank in the attic is overflowing: you’re going to have a flood either way.
Before I became a homeopath, I did sort of know this. We have all heard the expression “her hair went white with shock”. Apparently bombing survivors of World War II experienced a sudden whitening of hair, along with a number of other historical figures, including Thomas More – and allegedly Marie Antoinette. You may also have heard the expression “she turned her face to the wall and died”, referring to someone who has given up hope, lost the will to live, and died.
But I did not really grasp the significance of these phrases.
Now as a homeopath, I see it over and over again. Someone will experience a very difficult time emotionally, something they find incredibly hard to deal with, and the person’s system will “package” this up and put it somewhere in the body so their distress is expressed by them developing a physical problem.
- Jane, who was in her 70s, was having a terribly stressful time caring for her partner who had Parkinson’s. She finally managed to get a break for a week, but on the way home she developed welts of eczema around her waist because she was going back to such an intensely difficult and distressing situation.
- Kara, in her mid 50s, had just lost a long-term friend in difficult circumstances, and as well as the obvious grief, she had developed a terribly stiff neck which was causing her a lot of pain and which she was quite sure was not due to anything physical she had done.
- Miranda, in her mid-80s, had a health decision to make about which she became terribly anxious, and suddenly developed sciatica for absolutely no apparent physical reason.
- Noah, 15, developed a terrible rash all over his body because he was so distressed about the fall-out from an argument within his friendship group.
I’m glad to say that we resolved all of these problems with homeopathy. In each case we were able to address why the problem had arisen, and include the mental and emotional cause in the consideration of which remedy to prescribe. So the remedy addresses the mental and emotional issues, helping the person move through them, as well as helping resolve the physical expression of those issues.
Homeopathy is real healing – and it can be magical to see it happen.
This is such a different approach from that of suppressing the physical symptoms with pharmaceuticals – and quite possibly doing the same thing for the mental and emotional issues, just with different medication.
Homeopathy can enable us to recover from such com
plex issues because it considers all of you – mental, physical and emotional – as one entity, which of course it IS. Taking ALL of your symptoms into account allows us to find a remedy to match what’s going on, and nudge your system into restoring balance, so you get better.
Your body is a simply marvellous thing. It does everything it can to keep you on the road. And when it gets stuck, there is homeopathy to help it find its way back into balance.
And that’s pretty marvellous too.
