Anxiety can be very unpleasant and quite frightening. It can also make it much harder for you to function. To work out how to deal with this, we need to think about what is going on, and what you can do about it.
We are wired so that our systems prioritise dealing with emotions first, spending precious energy to try and address what we are feeling before anything else. There is a good evolutionary reason for this. If you are faced with a sabre-toothed tiger, considering where to gather firewood or how to produce the next meal is not a good plan – what you need to do is to pay attention to the emotion of fear and run like hell.
The result of this evolutionary trait (which probably kept us alive) is that if you are experiencing strong emotions – such as anxiety or a panic attack – your body will spend precious energy trying to deal with these emotions rather than allowing you to do anything else.
This means that whatever else you might need to do – physical or mental – is going to take second place, and may well not happen at all, because there just is not enough energy to spare. So if you need to focus on a job interview, or finishing a report, or figuring out the best route in heavy traffic, or cooking a meal, panicking will use up precious energy and you won’t be able to whatever it is you need to do as well as you should be able to.
So what is the best way of dealing with this?
Well, what we need to do is to calm your anxiety systems and get things back into a more useful perspective.
One of the best ways I know to do this is with homeopathy.
Homeopathy works by nudging your body to address whatever is out of balance – like anxiety or a panic attack – so that your body gets things back into balance and resolves the problem, so your energy can be used for what you need.
Using homeopathy to deal with panic before surgery, for example, can be an important part of helping yourself recover well quickly. If you are panicking before surgery, there will be less energy available for your body to cope with the shock of the surgery, and to do the healing afterwards.
Kara, a 55 year old mother of two had been terribly anxious in the weeks before a planned surgery, and was finding she just couldn’t cope. She wasn’t managing either her work or her family life as a result. She got in touch to find a remedy to help, and Aconite matched her symptoms. Afterwards I asked her how she had got on:
“It was quite incredible. I’m going to put up a statue to Aconite! I managed everything at home and at work, and I was super calm going into the op. Aconite really did its job.”
Hannah, who is 47, was also having trouble with anxiety. It was really slowing her down at work. She got so stressed about presentations she had to give that she felt she wasn’t able to shine. Aconite was a huge help here as well:
“Aconite has really been my friend. It has saved my life at work. It quietens the noise and the other problems, so I show up as the competent person I know I am. Even my boss was looking flustered but I was fine. ‘You did a great job of being unflappable!’ he told me after the presentation.”
Once you match the specific symptoms that go with the panic, the right remedy can really change things. You don’t have to stay stuck in the anxiety/panic loop: you can use your energy to heal, or to shine at work – or even just to get out of the door in the morning.
You can be yourself again.
